Will he come back? Before you keep waiting, ask these three cards

The day he moved out he said, "Let me think about it", and then nothing. You unpin his chat, then pin it again. Every time your phone buzzes, your heart jumps. Underneath "Will he come back?" sits another question: should I keep waiting, and for how long? Whether he comes back is not something you can decide. How you spend the weeks ahead is.

This page says "he" because that is how most people search, but it applies to a partner of any gender.

Three situations behind this question

They said they "need space"

Nobody said it was over. They just said they wanted some time alone. You don't want to crowd them, and you're afraid that if you let go, it really will end. Every day you wonder: is this a pause, or a slow exit?

Split up, but they still pop up

She texts "how are you?" at midnight. You write back a long paragraph; the next day she replies with a single emoji. You can't tell whether that is a sign she wants to come back or just loneliness.

They've already moved on

A friend mentions he has started seeing someone. You know you should move forward, and yet part of you still wants to ask: will he realise one day that it was me all along?

Turning it into a question you can draw on

The subject of "Will he come back?" is him, and there is no time limit. A hopeful card keeps you waiting; a hard one hurts more. Neither makes tomorrow any easier. A three-card spread reads past, present and advice, so reshape the question: how did this leaving happen, where am I now, and what can I do next?

Good ways to ask:

  • "He left two months ago. How should I spend the next month?"
  • "I've been waiting for him. What does this waiting mean for me right now?"
  • "If I want to set a deadline on this, what do I need to be clear about first?"

A way that won't help:

  • "Will he contact me next month?" It hands the whole answer to him, and afterwards you're still staring at your phone.

How the cards that often show up read here

  • The Star: hope is still here, but it points at your own recovery. In the advice position it means look after yourself first, rather than betting everything on him.
  • The Hermit: one of you needs time alone. That isn't bad, but it is a reminder that waiting can't become your whole life.
  • The Hanged Man: you have been suspended for a long time. Whether to stay hanging or look at it from another angle is the real question now.
  • Wheel of Fortune: things are shifting and won't stay as they are. The direction of the change may not be the one you're hoping for.
  • The Chariot: time to move. It often turns up when someone has waited too long, as a reminder to take the wheel back.

An example: you ask "He left two months ago. How should I spend the next month?" and draw The Hermit for the past, The Hanged Man for the present and The Chariot as advice. One reading: he left because he wanted to think things through alone; for two months you have stood still, waiting for his answer; for the month ahead, the best thing is to bring your attention back to your own life and pick one thing you have wanted to do but put on hold while you waited.

One or two things to do before you keep waiting

  • Put a date on the waiting. For example, "If we haven't had one real conversation by the end of next month, I'll start moving on." Write it down, and when the day comes, follow it.
  • Check their feed less. Not out of spite, but so that one update doesn't set your mood for the day. Start with one week of not looking.

Frequently asked questions

Can tarot predict whether he'll come back?

No. Whether someone comes back depends on their own decision. What the cards can show is where you are right now and a nudge on how to spend the time ahead.

If I draw a hopeful card, should I keep waiting?

A hopeful card says you have strength right now and things can turn, not that he is certain to return. Hold on to hope if you like, but don't put your life on pause. A deadline on the waiting will help you feel steadier.

I've already asked many times. Should I ask again?

If you keep asking the same "Will he come back?", try a different question: how do you want to live the next few weeks? LifeOs locks and saves each question, so you can look back and see how you have changed over this stretch.

Does this apply to same-sex relationships?

Yes. Every reading here works the same way for a partner of any gender.
