Wheel of Fortune tarot card: upright and reversed meaning in love, work and hard times

Your company announces a reorganization. Someone you have not heard from in a year suddenly messages you. A plan you spent six months on gets knocked sideways by something you never saw coming. Wheel of Fortune is the card for moments when things start turning on their own. You cannot control how the wheel spins, but you can decide where you stand on it, and whether you reach out when something comes around to you.

What the card shows

Wheel of Fortune is card X of the Major Arcana, the 22 trump cards of the tarot. A great wheel hangs in the clouds. Letters around its rim can be read as ROTA, Latin for "wheel", or as TARO. A sphinx holding a sword sits calmly on top. On the left a snake slides down with the turning wheel, and on the right a jackal-headed figure rises with it. In each corner, a winged creature sits in the clouds reading a book: an angel, an eagle, a lion and a bull.

The point of the card is that what rises also falls. The snake descends, the jackal ascends, and the wheel keeps turning. The sphinx on top does not move, and it stands for the part of you that does not get thrown around by every up and down. The creatures in the corners are reading, which suggests that even if change is not up to you, you can learn to read it.

Upright: the timing turns your way

Upright, Wheel of Fortune often means the situation is shifting and a window in your favor has opened. It might be an unexpected opportunity, a new person, or a turn you had not planned for. It does not guarantee the result, but it reminds you that windows like this do not stay open forever.

When you draw it upright, ask yourself what has shown up recently that was not there before. That is often what the wheel has brought around to you.

Reversed: stuck on the same loop, or fighting the timing

There are two common ways to read a reversed Wheel. One is a run of bad timing: plans keep getting disrupted, and whatever you try seems to fall just short. The other deserves closer attention: you are repeating a cycle. New job, new partner, and somehow you end up at exactly the same ending.

The reversal is not calling you unlucky. It is asking you to separate what is outside you from what is a choice you keep making. The first you can only wait out. The second can stop with you. If this sounds familiar, why you keep repeating the same pattern looks at it in more detail.

In love questions

In relationships, Wheel of Fortune is often about timing. A relationship might begin at an awkward moment, or come back to life after a chance meeting. Upright, it leans toward a window opening, and it may be worth taking the first step.

If the two of you keep cycling through fight, silence and making up, a reversed Wheel is almost a description of that loop. The question it raises is not "will we make up?" but "after this round, what has actually changed?" If nothing changes each time you reconcile, the next round is likely to come back.

In work questions

At work, the Wheel tends to match changes you cannot control: restructuring, ups and downs in your industry, a new boss. Upright, it says there is opportunity inside the change. Rather than worrying, find out what kind of person the new setup needs.

Reversed, it often appears when you have been waiting for the right moment. The market is bad, the company is a mess, the timing is off. Every reason is fair, but if you have been waiting a long time, it may be worth admitting that the perfect moment will not arrive. There is only the moment you are ready.

In a low point or a hard decision

In a low stretch, the question most people want answered is "when will this end?" The Wheel gives a gentle reminder: it keeps turning, and no position stays fixed forever. You do not have to simply wait, though. You can get your own part in order so that you are ready to catch what comes round.

Here is an example. You ask: "Should I use this reorg to apply for a spot on the new team?" An upright Wheel reads as: the window is open and it is worth a try. This week, talk to someone on that team and find out what they need before you formally apply. A reversed Wheel asks you to think first about what you are trying to leave: this team, or a situation you would run into wherever you went. If it is the second, changing teams may only put you on a different wheel.

As a yes or no answer

In a yes or no tarot reading, Wheel of Fortune sits with Justice in the not yet group: the outcome depends on timing and on what you do next. It leans yes, just not settled yet. Upright, it is "leaning yes, and the timing is getting closer". Reversed, it is "not the right moment, or step out of the old loop first".

The card before it is The Hermit, who works things out alone. The Wheel follows as the world outside starts to move. The card after it is Justice: once things have turned, you answer for the choices you make.

Frequently asked questions

Is Wheel of Fortune a good or bad card?

Neither. It is about change itself. Upright, the change often works in your favor. Reversed, things may be rough. Either way, how you respond matters more than the card.

Does Wheel of Fortune mean I will meet someone?

Upright, it is often read as a window for a new connection, but a window is not an outcome. It asks you to notice who and what has shown up lately. Whether you walk through is still your choice.

Does a reversed Wheel of Fortune mean I am unlucky?

It can describe a rough patch. What is more useful to check is whether you keep making the same choice. Outside ups and downs you can only wait out. Your own loops you can change.

Should I make a decision right away?

Not necessarily. The card is more a signal that the ground is shifting. Watching for a week or two to see what has actually changed before you act is usually the steadier move.
