I Ching Hexagram 32, Duration: how to read it for love, work and decisions
You have been in a relationship, a job or a habit long enough for the novelty to wear off, and now you are asking whether to keep going. When Hexagram 32 shows up, it is not praising your stamina. It is asking whether you are sticking to the right direction, and whether the way you are sticking to it can last. Duration here means steady movement in one direction, not standing still.

The image: thunder above, wind below
Hexagram 32 is built from two three-line trigrams. On top is Zhen, thunder: the one who starts things. Below is Xun, wind: the one who follows through and gets into every gap. Thunder rolls and the wind rises after it. Neither overpowers the other, which is why the old commentators used this pair as a picture of a partnership that lasts.
Think of two people who have worked together for years. One speaks up, the other makes it happen. Nothing dramatic, but the wheel keeps turning every day. It pairs naturally with the hexagram before it, Hexagram 31: that one is about two people first being moved by each other, this one is about what daily life looks like afterwards.
The judgment in one line
恒:亨,无咎,利贞,利有攸往。
In plain English: what can last goes smoothly and brings no serious mistake; holding to a sound direction pays off, and so does continuing forward. Notice the last part. Duration is not an invitation to dig in and stand guard. It asks you to keep walking, at the same pace, in the same direction.
What situation it describes
This hexagram tends to appear once the beginning is over and something now depends on daily upkeep. It makes two points. First, what lasts is built from small actions you can repeat, not one grand gesture. Second, once a direction is set, stop changing it every few days. The real danger here is not fatigue. It is wavering.
In love
If you are asking about a relationship that has already settled, Duration leans toward "worth continuing to invest in", but it asks whether your roles still work. Who initiates, who goes along, and are both of you still happy with that? If one person always leads and the other only follows, the follower gets tired and the leader gets disappointed.
If the relationship is new, the hexagram actually asks you to slow down. Wanting to know "is this forever?" three weeks in is exactly the mistake the first line warns about.
At work
For work questions, Duration usually points to building on the path you are already on. It suits long projects, roles where seniority matters and skills that only come from repetition. It does not suit changing direction every month or resetting your goals every quarter.
If you are thinking of quitting, the hexagram does not simply say "stay". It asks why you want to go. Is the path itself wrong, or has it just become boring? The first is a reason to leave. The second is often just what long-term work feels like.
When you face a decision
Here is an example question: "I have been running this side business for eight months and it still earns very little. Should I keep going until next year?"
With Hexagram 32, you could read it like this. It leans toward continuing, with a condition. Check the direction first. Have those eight months all built on the same thing? If so, Duration supports another stretch at the same pace, with a concrete checkpoint you set in advance. If you have repositioned three times in eight months, the problem is not a lack of persistence but a direction that was never settled. Fix the direction before you grit your teeth.

The six lines in brief
- Line 1: demanding deep, permanent commitment too early does harm. Let a new thing breathe before you ask it for promises.
- Line 2: regret fades when you stay in a moderate position. Do your part without overdoing it.
- Line 3: a stance that keeps shifting leads to embarrassment sooner or later. Keep the word and the rules you have set.
- Line 4: waiting in a field with no game. If the direction is wrong, no amount of persistence brings a catch.
- Line 5: steadiness that only repeats the old way suits someone following, not someone who has to decide. When the call is yours, precedent is not enough.
- Line 6: constant restless change destroys what could have lasted. The further along you are, the steadier your rhythm should be.
As a lean: go, hold back or wait
- Go: keep doing what has a clear direction and simply needs time.
- Hold back: from promising persistence while changing course constantly, or from demanding instant permanence at the start.
- Wait: this is rarely a "stop and wait" hexagram. It reads more like "do not stop, but do not speed up either".
Frequently asked questions
Is Hexagram 32 a good sign?
The judgment is favourable overall, with a condition: the direction you are sticking to has to be right. The fourth line describes persistence in the wrong direction, which only wastes more time the longer it lasts. So it works more like a mirror for your direction than a guarantee.
Does Duration in a love reading mean the relationship will last?
It describes what lasting requires, not a promised outcome. If you already have a steady way of being together, it leans toward continuing to invest. If things have only just begun, it reminds you not to rush into forever.
