I Ching Hexagram 31, Influence: how to read it for love, work and decisions
You feel something for someone, and you have a hunch they feel it too. A remark, a look, and something between you seems to have been touched. Hexagram 31 describes exactly that kind of mutual response. It is the hexagram people most often ask about for love, and its lean is good. It also walks you step by step through how attraction turns into real closeness instead of staying at the level of words.

The image: a lake on a mountain
Hexagram 31 has Dui (lake) above and Gen (mountain) below. A lake sits on top of a mountain: the mountain holds the lake up, and the lake's water feeds the mountain. One is firm, one is soft, and each depends on the other.
The Chinese name, xian, is the character for "feeling" with the heart component removed. The old idea is that the best kind of connection is not calculated; it simply happens. The commentary says that with a lake on the mountain, a person of character stays open and empty enough to truly take others in.
The judgment: 亨,利贞,取女吉
In plain English: things go through; it pays to stay true; taking a wife brings good fortune.
This is one of the few judgments in the book that mentions marriage directly. Today you do not have to read it only as a wedding. It says that a sincere connection between two people deserves to be taken seriously, and moving toward something lasting is good. The condition is still "stay true": the feeling needs to be genuine, not a calculation of the moment.
What situation this hexagram describes
Influence describes mutual attraction, with each side responding to the other. It is not only about romance. Any moment when two parties click counts: an interview where the conversation flowed, a partner you hit it off with straight away.
The six lines are unusual. They move up the body: big toe, calf, thigh, back, and finally jaw, cheeks and tongue. The body parts trace how a connection deepens from a first twitch of impulse to something mature.
In love
In love, the lean is clear: there is a real attraction between you. What you are sensing is not only in your head.
It also warns you against getting stuck in two places. One is the third line: following along with whatever the other person does, with no view of your own. The other is the top line: a connection that lives only in the jaw, cheeks and tongue, lots of nice words and no action. A good read: you have felt it, so respond with something concrete, like suggesting a time to meet or saying one clear sentence about how you feel.
At work
At work, Hexagram 31 often shows up when you click with a particular person or team. It could be a new partner or an opportunity that lights you up. The lean supports taking the conversation further.
The fourth line is worth remembering: when your thoughts keep swinging back and forth, only the friends right around you follow them. If you want a collaboration to become real, lay out what you actually think rather than endlessly guessing what the other side wants.
When you are making a decision
Example question: "I like a coworker. Should I ask him to lunch, just the two of us?"
With no changing lines, the read is: leans yes. The interest is likely mutual, and a relaxed lunch is a fitting step. If the second line is changing, the read becomes: do not rush. The calf wants to move and the legs want to run; going too fast would spoil it, so spend more ordinary time together first.

The six lines in plain words
- First line, the big toe: the first flicker of feeling. Not yet time to act.
- Second line, the calf: the urge to move. Rushing goes wrong; staying put is better.
- Third line, the thigh: following someone else's lead without your own view. Going on brings regret.
- Fourth line: stay steady. When your mind keeps swinging, your influence reaches only those closest to you.
- Fifth line, the back of the neck: feeling that is not swept along by surface emotion. No regret.
- Top line, jaw, cheeks and tongue: connection that stays in words, much said and little done.
As a lean: go ahead, hold off, or wait
- Go ahead: respond to the other person's interest, suggest meeting, say what you really think.
- Hold off: all talk and no action, moving to someone else's rhythm, overthinking back and forth.
- Wait: if the first or second line is changing, the feeling has only just started; spend more time together before pushing forward.
Frequently asked questions
Is Hexagram 31 a romance hexagram?
It is often asked about for love, and its judgment does mention marriage. But it covers any sincere connection between two sides. It is closer to saying: what you feel is real, and what happens next depends on how you respond.
If I cast Influence, does it mean they like me too?
It says there is a mutual response between you, and on that point its lean is positive. It does not decide for the other person and does not guarantee an outcome. The best way to find out is one concrete step, not endless guessing.
How does Hexagram 31 relate to Hexagram 32?
Hexagram 32, Duration, comes right after and is Hexagram 31 turned upside down. Influence is about being moved; Duration is about lasting. First the spark, then the staying power: together they trace a relationship from beginning to steady. The one before it is Hexagram 30. See the I Ching guide for all 64.
