I Ching Hexagram 49, Revolution: how to read it for love, work and decisions

You already know the current way of doing things has run its course. The pattern in your relationship wears you both out, the way you work is clearly out of date, the rhythm of your life stopped fitting a while ago. You want to change it, but you are afraid of making things worse. Hexagram 49 supports change, and real change at that, not patching. It also sets two conditions: the timing has to be right, and other people have to be able to trust it.

The image: lake above, fire below

Hexagram 49 has Dui, the lake, on top and Li, fire, below. Water pours down from above, fire burns up from below. The two cannot live together, and sooner or later one of them has to give. The character itself originally meant an animal hide stripped of its hair: the old surface removed completely.

The lower trigram is the same fire as Hexagram 30: clarity, seeing things as they are. That is why the change in Revolution is not an impulse. It is a decision made after seeing clearly.

The judgment in one line

革:巳日乃孚,元亨利贞,悔亡。

In plain English: only when the right day comes will the change be believed; then it goes through fully, rightly and to good effect, and regret falls away. The first phrase is the key to the whole hexagram. Changing things is not the hard part. Getting people to genuinely accept the change is, and that takes time.

What situation it describes

Revolution appears when the old way has reached its end and keeping it going now costs more than changing it. But it is not telling you to tear everything down today. The commentary on the image talks about setting the calendar in order and making the seasons clear: before a big change, read the timing carefully and lay out your reasons.

In love

If you are asking about a relationship where the same person always gives way, or the same argument keeps replaying, Revolution leans toward "this pattern needs to change". That might mean dividing things differently, setting new boundaries, or reconsidering the relationship itself.

What it does not support is a sudden, one-sided announcement. The third line says talk of change must go round three times before it is believed. Say what you have noticed and what you want to change, then give each other time for it to land.

At work

At work, Revolution often shows up when a process needs rebuilding, a team is being reorganised, or you are thinking of changing careers. Its reminders:

  • Explain why the change is unavoidable, with facts rather than frustration.
  • The first line says: if the time has not come, hold things firmly in place and wait.
  • Once the change is made, settle into it. The last line warns that continuing to overturn things after the change is done brings trouble.

When you face a decision

Here is an example question: "After seven years in my industry I have lost my spark. Should I move into design next year?"

With Hexagram 49, the reading agrees with your sense that this is not passing boredom; it really is time for a change. But "only when the right day comes will it be believed" asks you to get the conditions ready first: a portfolio, the core skills, a few months of savings, enough that people around you and future employers can see you mean it. Jump once you are ready. That is the second line: when the day comes, make the change, and going forward is favourable.

The six lines in brief

  • Line 1: bound tight with oxhide. The time has not come; do not move yet.
  • Line 2: when the day arrives, make the change. Going forward is favourable and blameless.
  • Line 3: charging ahead brings misfortune. Talk of change needs several rounds before people believe it.
  • Line 4: regret disappears. Once you have earned trust, changing course brings good fortune.
  • Line 5: a change as bold and visible as a tiger's new coat. People trust it without needing to be persuaded.
  • Line 6: once the change is complete, stop overturning things. Settle into the new shape and keep it.

As a lean: go, hold back or wait

  • Go: make a real change and drop what no longer works, as long as your reasons are clear and you are prepared.
  • Hold back: from forcing change before its time, or from changing again the moment one change is done.
  • Wait: the waiting here is specific. Wait until people can trust it and conditions are ready, then act decisively.

Frequently asked questions

Is Revolution telling me to make a big change right now?

No. It supports change, but the first and third lines both say "not so fast". The fortunate line is the second: change when the time is right. You can start preparing today; the moment of action waits until the conditions are in place.

I asked about my relationship and got Revolution. Does it mean breaking up?

Not necessarily. It says the way you are together needs to change completely. What it changes into could be new ground rules or it could be separating. Either way, it asks you to talk it through first rather than announce it.
