Career tarot reading: asking the cards about work

Your annual review just came back with a rating that is neither good nor bad. The same afternoon, a recruiter messages you about a role that sounds like a fit. You are not short of information; you are short of a way to line your thoughts up. A career tarot reading works best not for "will I ever be successful?" but for one thing that is already in motion: how it got here, where it is stuck right now, and where to put your effort next.

Free once you sign in. The free plan copies the full reading instructions so you can paste them into the chat assistant you already use; the online plan gives you the reading right away and keeps the question in your log.

Three situations people bring to a career reading

Doing fine, but no next step in sight

You have been in the same role for three or four years. Your work is solid and your manager trusts you, but your name never appears on the promotion list. You start to wonder whether it is you, or whether there was never a place for you to move into. The useful question here is "what am I missing right now?", not "will I get promoted?"

Two offers, and you cannot choose

One side is a familiar team and a steady pace. The other is a new industry, better pay and a lot more uncertainty. You have listed the pros and cons of both, and the lists only made it murkier. The cards can help you see what you actually care about on each side. If the two options weigh about the same and a lot of factors are involved, a Celtic Cross may suit you better; the should I quit my job page explains why.

Handed something you do not want to do

The new project sits outside what you are good at. Turning it down might hurt your review, and taking it on means you might fail at it. What you really want to know is whether this is a burden or an opening.

Why three cards

The three-card spread reads as past, present and advice. The first card shows how this situation got to where it is, the second shows what is really going on now, and the third gives you a direction you can act on straight away. Most work questions are about one thing in progress, and three cards hold that neatly without burying you in detail.

How to ask it so the cards can answer

Better ways to ask:

  • "Should I push to lead the new project this quarter?" It has a time frame and an action, so the advice card turns into something you can do.
  • "Where is my working relationship with this team getting stuck?" The focus stays on the relationship instead of on guessing what other people think.
  • "What would taking this overseas posting mean for my next two years?" A natural fit for past, present, advice.

A weaker way to ask:

  • "When will my career take off?" "Take off" has no definition and the time frame is too distant, so the cards can only give you something that would be true for anyone.

Cards that often come up in work questions

  • The Magician: you already have the resources. What is missing is asking and doing. In the advice position it often simply says: raise your hand, apply.
  • The Emperor: rules, structure and whoever is in charge. It may point to a need for clearer roles, or remind you that going through the proper channel is faster than going around it.
  • The Chariot: a clear goal and forward drive. Good for a push, with a reminder not to charge ahead blindly.
  • Strength: handle a difficult person or situation with patience rather than force.
  • The Hanged Man: nothing moves if you push, so change the angle. In the present position it often means you are waiting on a decision you cannot control.
  • The Sun: things are out in the open and visible. A good moment to show your results rather than waiting for someone to notice.

An example. You ask "should I push to lead the new project this quarter?" and draw The Hanged Man for the past, Strength for the present and The Magician as advice. One way to read it: you have been waiting to be assigned things; you are now steady enough to handle more; the next step is to ask for it rather than keep waiting.

Two small things to do before you decide

First, talk your situation through with someone you trust who is not on your team. Halfway through explaining it, you will often hear which way you are already leaning.

Second, write what you want as one sentence, such as "leading a small team within a year". With that sentence in hand, every opportunity becomes easier to judge: does it move you closer, or send you the long way round?

If you want to see your usual patterns around work and responsibility, the life manual has a chapter on exactly that.

Frequently asked questions

Can career tarot predict whether I will get promoted?

It does not make that kind of prediction. What it can help you see is the gap between what you are doing now and the result you want.

Is asking once enough?

Yes. LifeOs locks each question when you ask it, and later you can come back and note what happened, so you can see how well your read held up.

Are three cards enough for a work question?

For one thing in progress, yes. For weighing two options or deciding whether to quit, where many factors are in play, the Celtic Cross is a better fit.

What is the difference between the free and online plans?

The free plan builds the complete reading instructions to paste into the chat assistant you already use. The online plan gives you the reading inside LifeOs and keeps every question in one place.
